Materials for Fursuit making

By WeaverOwl

Important:

• To brush wellsoft (plush fabric) use a soft-bristled brush. • To brush fur use a slicker brush, held in an uppside down position to prevent it from ripping out too much fur.
It's gonna take some out, but do not worry about it.

Directory:

Stuff I personally use to craft:

Materials and Fabrics:

  1. Foam (I get it from a local upholstery store.)
  2. Fur (I used to buy from local Hungarian stores, but I'm currently switching to ordering better quality fur fabrics from Howl Fabric, Big Z Fabric, or Aliexpress. There's a good store that I've only heard good about so far. If you prefer Howl or Big Z for a commission, I can absolutely order from there for you.)
  3. Wellsoft (a type of minky, used for plush making. It has a short fur-like look. I'm planning to also get plain minky for paw pads.)
  4. Anti-pill Polar Fleece
  5. DOESNT YET HAVE A NAME (I use it as lining, it's soft and stretchy.)
  6. Felt sheets (For eyelashes)
  7. Craft foam (For the eyes)
  8. Gobelin Kanava (Mesh in the eye.)
  9. Velcro
  10. Neodymium magnets
  11. Anything else I can get my hands on.

Paint:

  1. Acrylic Paints
  2. Acrylic Spray Paints (Occasionally, for plastic parts.)

Tools:

  1. Scissors
  2. Box cutter
  3. Gluegun
  4. Gluesticks
  5. Duct tape
  6. Paper (For patterns, ect.)
  7. Sewing Needles
  8. Sewing pins
  9. Sewing clips (life savers btw)
  10. Sewing machine
  11. Thread
  12. Graphite pencil
  13. Pen
  14. Alcoholic marker (Occasionally.)
  15. Slicker brush
  16. Mannequin head
  17. Mannequin (For sewing)
  18. Ruler
  19. Tape measure (Not the self retracting)
  20. Electric pet shaver

Stores I order/plan to order from

(Note: I mainly buy from local stores as of today (2024.03.30.), so this may not be so useful for you if you're not from Hungary.)

I currently access:

  1. K-Elme Kft.
  2. Textilkuckó
  3. Textilbarlang
  4. For foam the store varies.

I plan to order from:

  1. Howl Fabric
  2. Big Z Fabric
  3. Aliexpress

What you'll NEED to make your first Fursuit head

Absolutely need:

  1. A pair of scissors (Big ones, if possible sharp)
  2. Foam (NOT old mattress, you can get a big ol table of foam for $10-15USD in upholstery stores. I recommend 2 cm thickness.)
  3. Some kind of fabric to cover the foam
  4. Thread
  5. Sewing needle
  6. Craft foam (You can get 1-3 for about a dollar I think, look it up. Artist stores can be more expensive.)
  7. Some kind of mesh (Buckram if you can, or visit a fabric store and ask them if they have mesh for gobelin, a form of tapestry. You'll need one you can see through from up close.)
  8. Duct tape (Not translucent)
  9. Pen
  10. Tape measure
  11. Time, patience and a BUNCH of RESEARCH!

"But Owl, where's the glue gun?" - You technically do not need a glue gun if you can sew. I hardly recommend doing it this way,
but you can sew together foam until you have a base. I would still recommend getting a gluegun tho.
That said, the next paragraph follows:

Recommended/good to have:

  1. A pair of scissors (Big ones, if possible sharp, or Tailor's scissors)
  2. Box cutter (Makes cutting foam heavenly)
  3. Foam (NOT old mattress, you can get a big ol table of foam for $10-15USD in upholstery stores. I recommend 2 cm thickness.)
  4. Any kind of fabric (if fur - it's better to buy something better than craft fur.)
  5. Thread
  6. Sewing needle
  7. Sewing pins OR Sewing clips (The clips are very good.)
  8. Craft foam (You can get 1-3 for about a dollar I think, look it up. Artist stores can be more expensive.)
  9. Some kind of mesh (Buckram if you can, or visit a fabric store and ask them if they have mesh for gobelin, a form of tapestry. You'll need one you can see through from up close.)
  10. Duct tape (Not translucent)
  11. Pen, Pencil, Marker (Don't overdo the marker)
  12. Tape measure
  13. Ruler
  14. Gluegun
  15. Gluesticks (Like 20 for good measures)
  16. Mannequin head (Normal shaped)
  17. Electric pet shaver
  18. Time, patience and a BUNCH of RESEARCH!

Extras:

(Good to have, but I would not go out of my way to save up for them for my first head.)
• Electric bread knife (In case you really want to cut THICK foam, or harder materials.)
• Sewing machine (Harder to sew details with, but in some cases I see use of it for a head.)

What I messed up on my first head:

Let's talk about Yellow.

"What do you mean?? That's amazing for a first try!!" - Yes, thank you, i know, i'm perfect. (/irony)

The mistakes:

  1. WAAAY too much glue. It's very heavy. You don't need a lot of glue to make a suit. You probably want it soft and light, and not
heavy and indestructable. (Not that would be a bad thing), but Yellow hurt my neck the first (and last) convention I worn him to.
Expecially don't glue the fur on with a million glue sticks... That's gonna stay on if you sew properly.
  2. That gets us to the next isssue: His ears are falling off. :) I could fix that now, but i don't plan to wear him again, so i
don't see the point in that. At least the ears stayed on while in the convention.
  3. The paws are also coming apart btw. So just. Sew properly. Please.
  4. It's small. One of the big issues i have with him. :( My face gets squished on the inside.
  5. There's a velcro bit in his mouth (to attach the tongue), and it's just big enough to reach my chin. It's annoying and painful.

These are my personal complaints about Yellow. He does look amazing, I love him to death, but I just can't wear him. My neck can't take the weight. :"]

If you're still reading, thank you! And don't give up, as I made Yellow with 0 sewing experience prior. Nor have I carved foam and used
a glue gun. If I did it, you can do it too!
